Relax your eyes. Let it appear.
Every print holds a hidden 3D image. You do not need special glasses. You only need to change where your eyes focus. This is called the parallel, or wall-eyed, method.
Step by step
- Find good light. Even, glare-free light works best.
- Stand close. Bring your face near the print, close enough that it looks blurry.
- Look through it. Let your eyes relax as if you were gazing at something far behind the print. Do not try to focus on the pattern.
- Step back slowly. Keep your gaze soft and move back a little at a time.
- Wait for depth. The pattern will start to feel layered. Stay relaxed and the hidden shape will sharpen.
- Explore. Once it appears, let your eyes wander across the image. It will hold.
Tips
- Try the reflection trick. On a framed print, focus on your reflection in the glazing, then let the image come through.
- Blink less and breathe. Tension makes it harder.
- Do not cross your eyes. Aim to look past the print, not in front of it.
- Remove reading glasses if you use them only for close work.
- Take breaks. If your eyes feel tired, look away and try again later.
How long does it take?
For some people the image appears in seconds. For others it takes a few minutes, or a few tries across different days. Once you have seen one, the next usually comes faster.
Still not seeing it?
That is normal, and the print still works as a piece of art on its own. Every product page has an optional tap to reveal, so you can see what is hidden before you keep trying.
A small number of people find autostereograms difficult or impossible to see, for example those with limited vision in one eye. If viewing causes discomfort, stop and rest your eyes.
